No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul downs BSU Volleyball, 3-0
BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Gymnasium) - The No. 1 ranked Concordia University, St. Paul Golden Bears were too much for the Bemidji State University volleyball team as the Beavers fell 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-15) Tuesday at BSU Gymnasium. The Golden Bears remain unblemished with a 19-0 mark (10-0 NSIC). BSU falls to 4-14 (1-9 NSIC).

The Golden Bears out hit the Beavers .424 to .146 on the night with 49 kills, 10 errors and 92 attempts. BSU had 25 kills, 12 errors and 89 attempts. The Beavers struggled in the first two games but came out and hit .267 in the final game of the night despite the 25-15 loss.

Bethany Thompson
(Jr., OH, Owatonna, Minn.) paced the Beavers with seven kills and hit .217 on the match. Kimberly Hacker (Sr., MB/RS, Hutchinson, Minn.) added six kills and hit. 385 on the night. Kelly Niles (Fr., OH, Grand Rapids, Minn.) had four kills on the night.

At setter, Jessi-Beth McCannell (Sr., Brandon, Manitoba) and Courtney Volkmann (Fr., Wadena, Minn.) split time with Volkmann playing the entire second game. Both Volkmann and Elissa Christensen (Fr., DS, Montevideo, Minn.) earned their first starts on the night with the Beaver changing their starting line-up for the first time this season.

Laura Carlson
(Jr., Lib., Hutchinson, Minn.) led BSU defensively with 10 digs.

2011 NSIC Preseason Player of the Year Megan Carlson led Concordia-St. Paul with 12 kills and 15 digs. Carlson hit .385 for the match. Ashley Murtha added 13 kills and hit .435 for the match while Michelle Graham notched 11 kills and boasted a .381 hitting percentage. 2010 AVCA Freshman of the Year Amanda Konetchy kept the Golden Bears poised offensively with 42 assists on the match.

Defensively, in addition to Carlson’s 15 digs, libero Taylor Fieldsted added 11 digs while Katie Habeck had four block assists.

BSU falls to 23-9-1 all-time against Concordia-St. Paul. The Beavers have now lost the last 21 matches to the Golden Bears dating back to Nov. 2, 2001.

The Beavers will face Winona State University and Upper Iowa University in road matches this weekend. The matches will mark the first time BSU has played a match against a unranked opponent since facing Augustana College Sept. 30. The Beavers have played six of their last seven matches against ranked foes. BSU fell to Winona State and Upper Iowa in nonconference matches at the Minnesota Duluth Tournament earlier this season.
