Beavers fall to MSU Moorhead, 3-0

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University volleyball team fell to Minnesota State University, Moorhead, 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-16) on Friday night at the BSU Gymnasium. With the loss, the seventh in a row for BSU, the Beavers now stand at 3-12 on the season with a 1-7 ledger in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. BSU also remained winless in four home matches in 2012.

“I still believe we’re very close to breaking through,” said Beaver head coach Wayne Chadwick. “We’ve got a lot of good kids that are working hard and today our passes were up at the net.”

The first set of the night started off with the two teams playing even until halfway through, when the Dragons went on a big run to seal the 1-0 lead. After fighting to grab a 12-10 edge, MSUM took control and went on an 11-1 run to break the game open. MSU Moorhead finished by scoring 15 of the last 18 points for a 25-13 win.

In Game 2, MSUM and Bemidji State battled for points throughout the first half of the set, but the Dragons again found a way to create separation. The Beavers kept the match close, trailing 9-8 at one point, but MSU Moorhead prevented BSU from going on a momentum-generating point streak. A four-point run propelled MSUM to a 25-18 victory.

The Dragons picked up in the third set where they left off before the intermission, jumping out to a quick 3-0 and not looking back to grasp their third conference win. After skating a three-point lead, MSUM scored nine points in a row to put a stranglehold on the match. BSU tried to fight back with an 8-1 run of its own, but MSU Moorhead closed out its 11th win of the season with a five-point run to take a 25-16 win in Set 3.

Bethany Thompson (Sr., OH, Owatonna, Minn.) led the Beavers with nine kills and Courtney Volkmann (So., S, Wadena, Minn.) picked up 21 assists on the night. Freshman Courtney Fox (Fr., DS, Hutchinson, Minn.) tallied a team-high seven digs for Bemidji State and added the team’s lone ace as she held serve for six consecutive points in the last set.

NCAA Division II digs leader Katy Ness of MSU Moorhead added 10 to her previous season total of 377, while teammate Heidi Lensing took advantage of an off-passing night from BSU to rack up five services aces and a pair of solo blocks.

“There were flashes, but we could’ve been a little bit more consistent throughout all three games,” Chadwick said. “Moorhead is a very good team—at one point they were ranked 19th in the country—and there were sections of all three of those games where we were right there.”

The Beavers continue a four-match homestand on Saturday afternoon when they host another NSIC foe, Northern State University, at 3. Before BSU plays another road match, it will play two more contests at home next weekend. Second-ranked Southwest Minnesota State University will visit on Friday before the University of Sioux Falls comes to town on Saturday for its first-ever meeting with Bemidji State as a member of the NSIC.
