BEMIDJI, Minn. – After hosting five successful clinics last year, the Bemidji State University volleyball program will put on six Winter Volleyball Clinics for athletes grades 6-12 from Jan. 13, 2012 to March 24, 2013. All clinics will be held at the BSU Gymnasium and, due to the turnout for last year’s clinics, middle school and high school athletes will be separated into their own two-hour sessions for each camp. The middle school athletes will go from 2-4 p.m. and the high school athletes will hit the court from 4-6 p.m.
The cost of the camps is $35 for first clinic attended, $30 for second and third clinic attending, and $25 for the fourth, fifth, and sixth clinics.
The first camp held will be an outside hitter camp on Jan. 13. The clinic will allow left and right side hitters to work on footwork, arm swing, and hitting sets off different tempos and placements along the net.
A second camp will be held Jan. 20 for setters. The camp's topics will range from basic form and position to setting different types of sets. Transitioning from the back row, as well as from defense and blocking, may also be covered.
The third camp of the winter is slated for Feb. 3 and will be for setters and middle hitters. Setters and middle hitters will begin the camp working separately and then will work together because of the importance of timing between the two positions. Players will progress to learning timing for a variety of play sets.
Feb. 24, a fourth camp will be held to help develop basic passing (serve receive) and defensive skills. Any player who wishes to improve these skills is welcome—the clinic is not only for defensive specialists.
The fifth camp is slated for March 10 and will focus on blocking and serving. All athletes will spend time working on both skills. The final 30 minutes of the clinic will be dedicated to working on skill of athlete’s choice.
This year, a new combination clinic has been scheduled for March 24. There, athletes will transition and perform multiple skills in game-like situations which may include defense to hitting, blocking to hitting, blocking to setting, and defense to setting.
