Upper Iowa downs Bemidji State, 3-1

BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Gymnasium) — Upper Iowa University knocked off the Bemidji State University volleyball Friday evening at BSU Gymnasium. With the win, the Peacocks improve to 9-8 overall and 4-5 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play, while Bemidji State falls to 3-14 overall and 1-8 in conference play.  

Senior Kelsi Crawford (OH, Wadena, Minn.) led BSU offensively with 12 kills, while Kayla DeJong (DS, Jr., Jefferson, Wis.) spearhead the defensive effort with 23 digs.

Set 1: Bemidji State struggled offensively in the first committing 13 attacking errors. Upper Iowa took full advantage of the Beavers’ miscues to winning the first frame 25-12. In addition to the Beaver miscues, UIU used eight kills with no errors to upend the Beavers.

Set 2: The Beavers tied the match 1-1 with a 25-18 victory in the second frame. Crawford and Chelsea Frison (MB, Jr., Whitewater, Wis.) led BSU with four kills each and the Beavers posted 16 kills collectively in the second. After committing no errors in the first, UIU committed five errors and hit under .100 for the set (.093).

Set 3: Both teams corrected early offensive struggles to produce an offensive shootout in the third. BSU hit a match-best .282 in the stanza, but Upper Iowa hit a little bit better at .310 and the latter took the frame, 25-21. Bemidji State had a lead as late as 15-14, but the Peacocks got four kills from Jennifer Mundt in the last 11 points to take a 2-1 lead.

Set 4: BSU and UIU were locked in a tight battle until a 7-0 run at the 11-11 mark by the Peacocks separated the two squads. Upper Iowa also had a 4-0 run at the end to put the Beavers away, 25-14.   

Bemidji State returns to action tomorrow against Winona State University. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. from the BSU Gymnasium.
