BURNSVILLE, Minn. – The Bemidji State University volleyball program was voted to finish 13th as the 2019 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll was released today. Senior middle blocker Julie Touchett was named BSU’s Player to Watch by the NSIC for the third consecutive season.

A 2019 team captain and native of Verona, Wis., Touchett is a two-time Fall NSIC All-Academic Team member and finished second on BSU in attack percentage (.271) and blocks (73) last season. She recorded 197 kills and averaged 1.93 kills per set and currently leads all active Beavers in career kills, attack attempts, solo blocks, assisted blocks and total blocks.

A qualifier of the 2018 NCAA Division II National Tournament, Northern State University was voted first in the NSIC Preseason Coaches’ Poll with 209 total points and six first-place votes. A quarterfinalist in the 2018 NCAA Division II National Tournament, Concordia University-St. Paul was voted to finish second in a tie with University of Minnesota Duluth. Both programs nabbed 203 total points, while CSP took five first-place votes and UMD took four. Bemidji State totaled 43 points to be slotted 13th, finishing ahead of Minot State University, University of Minnesota Crookston and University of Mary. The Beavers’ 13th-place marking is the highest for the program to start the season since the 2012 NSIC Preseason Coaches’ Poll.

The 2019 Beaver Volleyball schedule begins Tuesday, August 27 with an exhibition against Valley City State University in Bemidji, Minn. BSU officially opens the season at the Ferris State Invitational with four games between Sept. 6-7. The home and conference opening weekend are scheduled for Friday, Sept. 20 against Minnesota State University, Mankato and Saturday, Sept. 21 against Concordia-St. Paul.
