“ Both can capture a spot immediately,” said Falkenhagen. “I am really looking forward to them playing here and helping us bring further success to this program.” Carlson, a 6-0 middle blocker, was a member of the Kaepa Northern Lights club team based in Burnsville, Minn. She has been a part of the Ultimate High Junior Youth-17 Team for two seasons. A student at New Prague High School, Carlson helped her volleyball squad to a second-place finish in the Missota Conference and a 10-17 overall mark for the 2003 season. Also, Carlson competed on the track squad and has earned two letters apiece in band and academics. A talented student, Carlson ranks in the top 40 in the senior class of approximately 240. “Carlson brings height as well as a lot of volleyball background as far as club ball and a successful high school program,” said Falkenhagen. “She is fast and very intelligent at her position.” Utzerath, a 6-0 outside hitter, played her high school ball at Beaver Dam High, which is an institution in the Division I Wisconsin Little Ten Conference. Utzerath led her club to a regional appearance this season and was the only junior starter in 2002. Her totals of 45 block assists and 25 solo blocks were a team high as a junior. Utzerath is a member of the National Honor Society, Honor Roll, basketball and softball teams. In 2002-03, Utzerath was recognized on the all-conference basketball second team. “Chelsea is going to fill in at outside hitter,” said Falkenhagen. “She brings quickness, a quick arm swing that we can utilize as well as good passing fundamentals.” Bemidji State caps off the 2003 season on the road with a visit to SW Minnesota State Friday and Wayne State (Neb.) Saturday. The Beavers already have their most successful season since the 1999 club, with the 14-16 overall mark. ![]() |
