FARGO, N.D. –-- [box score] The Bemidji State University women's basketball team was out-matched tonight as it traveled to Fargo, N.D. to battle first-year NCAA Division I opponent North Dakota State University. The Bison led from the opening tip to the final buzzer, handing the Beavers their second loss of the season, 80-49.
Bemidji State hung right with the Bison offensively, shooting the ball better than NDSU from beyond the arch (6-16, .375) and from the free-throw line (11-14, .786). But lost the battle on the glass (48-28) as the Bison grabbed close to a pair of rebounds for every one the Beavers pulled down. BSU also committed 25 turnovers to the Bison's 15.
NDSU took advantage of those miscues by BSU grabbing a 31-point advantage, outscoring the Beavers 24-6 on second-chance opportunities and 27-16 off of turnovers.
A bright spot for BSU tonight was the play of senior co-captain Stacia Swanson (Sioux City, Iowa). The forward collected a season-high 20 points on 7-of-14 from the floor, 1-of-2 from three-point land and 5-for-6 from the line. She also pulled down team-bests seven boards and one block. Fellow co-captain Allison Sanderberg (Duluth, Minn.) also tallied a personally season-high of 14 points in the game.
The NDSU charge was led by 18 points from Brandee Gibbs. Gibbs also tied teammate Leah Klabo with a game-high eight rebounds.
The loss drops Bemidji State to 1-2 overall . the team will be back in action Friday and Saturday (Nov. 26-27) when they travel to Grand Forks, N.D. to compete in the University of North Dakota Tournament. Friday the Beavers face Colorado State-Pueblo while they battle Seattle Pacific Saturday. Both games are scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. tip-off in the Betty Engelstad Sports Center.
