BEMIDJI, Minn. –
Bemidji State University sophomore Maggie Gernbacher (Bloomington, Minn.) has been named as one of three Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Players of the Week, the league office announced Monday. She shares the honor with Southwest Minnesota State’s Michelle Bruns and Concordia-St. Paul’s Jennifer Pozzani.

Gernbacher averaged 24.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals per game while shooting .500 (18-36) from the field and .474 (9-19) from beyond the arc as BSU went 1-1 on the week. Along the way, Gernbacher led BSU to it second victory of the season with a career-best 31 points versus Colorado State-Pueblo before totaling 18 points in a 76-56 loss to No. 6 Seattle Pacific University in the Betty Engelstad Thanksgiving Classic in Grand Forks, N.D.

The award is the first of Gernbacher’s career and is the first for BSU in 2004-05.

Since Mike Power took over head coaching responsibilities at BSU in 2002, just two players have been bestowed with an NSIC Player of the Week award. Senior forward Stacia Swanson has garnered the award three times (12/2/02, 1/18/04 and 2/23/04) and now Gernbacher.

The Bemidji State women’s basketball team is 2-3 on the season and is currently in Colorado awaiting its Wednesday (Dec. 1) game versus the Colorado School of Mines. The contest is scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m. CST. The team will then travel to Golden, Colorado to compete in the Coors Classic. In the classic the Beavers will face Mike Power’s previous team Metro State Friday and Regis University Saturday with both tilts set for a 8:00 p.m. tip-off.
