Peterson Garners NSIC Player of the Week honor
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference today announced that Bemidji State University junior center Stephanie Peterson has been selected as the Player of the Week for her efforts last weekend at the American Family Insurance Classic in Duluth, Minn.
Peterson finished the week posting averages of 19 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists as BSU posted a 1-1 record and broke into the win column with a 79-69 victory over No. 4 St. Cloud State University.
Peterson equaled a career-high scoring mark Friday night in a 73-72 overtime loss to Minnesota Duluth going 6-for-12 (.500) from the field and hitting 8-of-8 (1.000) from the free-throw line while corralling
13 rebounds. Saturday the junior center netted 18 points and grabbed game-high 12 rebounds in a head-to-head battle with St. Cloud State's All-American candidate Erika Quigley. In that final game of the classic she was 7-of-18 from the floor (.389), matched a career-mark with four steals and used a 6-for-6 performance at the line to finish the event perfect from the line (14-14).
For her efforts she was named to the 2006 American Family Insurance All-Classic team.
The Bismarck, N.D. native currently leads the NSIC in scoring and rebounding.
The conference award marks the first of the season for BSU and the second of its kind for Peterson. She was also the focus of the league honor Feb. 27, 2005 after a week in which she averaged 19.5 points and 7.0 rebounds versus Winona State University and Concordia University-St. Paul.
The Beavers (1-3/0-0 NSIC) break the seal on league play this weekend when they hit the road for a pair of contests at Wayne State College (Neb.) and Southwest Minnesota State University. Both games are set for 6 p.m. starts.
