Althoff named to NSIC All-Freshman Team

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Bemidji State University freshman center Jessie Althoff (Becker, Minn.) has been named to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference All-Freshman Team announced today by the league office. Althoff led the Beavers in scoring in 2009-10 with 10.1 points per game, recording double-figures in a team-high 14 contests.

“It’s a great award to cap off a great freshman season,” said head coach Mike Curfman. “Jessie made great strides throughout the season and finished strong to develop into our top scorer. Hopefully this is a glimpse of things to come.”

Althoff played in all 27 games, starting 22. Her 10.1 points per game led a BSU team that finished the regular-season ranked 58th in the nation (300 ranked) in scoring offense at a 71.6 clip. Her point total also led a BSU freshmen class that averaged 31.4 points per game to lead the team. She posted double-figures in scoring in the final four games of the season (19.3 ppg), including a season-high 25 in the final game against Wayne State College Feb. 27. Her 18 points against then-No. 11 Minnesota State University, Mankato guided the Beavers to a 80-72 victory over the defending national champions.

She led the team in field goals made (109) and attempted (251), en route to the third best field goal percentage (at least 50 attempts) on the team at 43.4 percent. Althoff collected 49 offensive rebounds during the season to rank second on the team, posting 3.6 rebounds per game. She shot 80.7 percent from the free throw line, which sat fourth on the squad.

The all-freshman team marks the first for the NSIC after the women’s coaches decided to add the team during off-season meetings. The last Bemidji State players to be selected to an all-conference team was Amy Lawson (first team), Heidi Matzke (third team) and Stephanie Peterson (honorable mention) after the 2007-08 season.

The Beavers finished the 2009-10 season with a 12-15 overall and 6-14 NSIC record, finishing tied for 11th in the final conference standings. BSU’s record is a vast improvement from last season’s 3-24 overall and 1-19 NSIC mark. The Beavers will return the majority of their line-up next season, as the squad was made-up of just one senior, two juniors, five sophomores and six freshmen.
