Beavers upend Grand View to conclude Maverick Classic

MANKATO, MINN. - The Bemidji State University women’s basketball team used a balanced scoring effort to take down Grand View University to finish the 2010 Maverick Classic with a 1-1 overall record. BSU improves to 2-1 on the season with Saturday afternoon’s victory. Grand View falls to 3-6 on the season with the loss.

Jessie Althoff (So., F/C, Becker, Minn.) paced the Beavers with 13 points and nine rebounds. Samantha Baldwin (Jr., G, St. Thomas, N.D.) tallied 11 points on the game and was four-of-four from the charity stripe. Colleen McKay (Sr., C, Barnum, Minn.) chipped in nine points. Sydney Epema (Jr., G, Crookston, Minn.) added eight points including two three-pointers. Ellie Wessling (Fr., G/F, Winsted, Minn.) who led BSU in scoring in her first two collegiate games was held to five points but led BSU with 13 rebounds. The Beavers were six-of-14 from beyond the arc for 42.9 percent. Shannon Thompson (So., G, Rosemount, Minn.) dished out five assists on the game. BSU outrebounded Grand View 46 to 29.

Grand View was led in scoring by Jennifer Jorgenson with 23 points including 17 in the second half. Amy Vos added 16 points on seven-of-15 shooting from the field. Danielle Ballard added 13 points including 11 in the first half. Jorgenson also led the Vikings on the boards with seven. Grand View shot 39.1 percent from the field.

The Vikings opened the second half on an 8-0 run to cut the Beavers lead to one but BSU was quickly able to end the run and moved the lead from one to eight after going on a 7-0 run of their own. The Beavers went into the locker room with a 41-33 advantage over the Vikings.

BSU used scoring from several individuals in the first half in order to get out to the early lead. Epema led BSU in scoring with eight points including two made three-pointers. McKay chipped in seven points. Hebrink and Althoff each added five points in the first half. Wessling scored three points but led BSU in the first half with nine rebounds. BSU shot 46.7 percent from the field in the opening period. The Beavers were five-of-nine from beyond the arc.

Grand View was led in scoring by Ballard who tallied 11 points on four-of-five shooting from the field in the first half. Vos added nine for the Vikings. Grand View shot 38.7 percent from the field in the opening half.

Wessling, a freshman for the Beavers, ended her first week in a BSU uniform averaging 14.0 points in three games and 9.0 rebounds. Wessling had double-digit rebounds in both of her Maverick Classic games after recording a double-double against No. 19 California University (Pa.) on Friday.

Bemidji State will return to the court on Dec. 3 when they open conference play at home against Minnesota State University Moorhead at 6 p.m., at BSU Gymnasium.
