MARSHALL, Minn. - The Bemidji State University women's basketball team outshot their opponents for the second game in a row but were again unable to convert down the stretch as they fell 57-54. BSU had a one-point lead with 29 seconds remaining but a jumper by Abby Kenealy gave SMSU the 55-54 lead with 19 seconds left on the clock and the Mustangs never looked back. Morgan Lee (Fr., G, Hayward, Wis.) led the way for the Beavers with 13 points.
The Beavers made a late run at the Mustangs after being down five with two minutes remaining in the second period. Anna Hebrink (Sr., G, Austin, Minn.) connected from downtown to put the Beavers within two. With 33 seconds left Hebrink hit a free throw after a Heather Smith foul and BSU subsequently got the offensive rebound leading to a converted jumper from Jessie Althoff (So., F/C, Becker, Minn.) to take lead by one with 29 seconds left. However the Mustangs got the lead back and did not relinquish it.
The Beavers were paced offensively by Lee’s 13 points on four of nine shooting from the field. Ellie Wessling (Fr., G/F, Winsted, Minn.) added her second career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Wessling has averaged 7.25 rebounds per game over the last four games for the Beavers. Hebrink also tallied double figures for the Beavers with 12 points on four of 14 shooting from the floor. BSU outshot their foes 30.4 percent to 29.0 percent. SMSU outrebounded the Beavers 50 to 43. Bemidji State had 17 turnovers to 13 for the Mustangs.
Southwest Minnesota State was led by Kenealy’s double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds. Tori Fink led the Mustangs in scoring with 15 points on five of 10 shooting from the floor. Laure Kramer paced SMSU on the glass with 15 on the night.
BSU went into the locker room with a 21-19 lead over Southwest Minnesota State in a low-scoring first half. The Beavers took their first lead on McKay’s layup with 1:06 remaining in the period to give the Beavers’ their half-time lead. Both teams struggled from the field as BSU shot 28.6 percent to SMSU’s 19.4 percent. The Mustangs outrebounds the Beavers 27 to 23 in the half.
Bemidji State was paced by Wessling’s six points and seven rebounds. Lee and Baldwin added five points in the half.
Southwest Minnesota State was led by Fink with six points and three rebounds. Kenealy was a force on the boards in the half with nine and added five points to the Mustang attack.
BSU’s road losing streek drops to 12 games stretching back to the 2009-10 campaign. The Beavers will return home next weekend for games at BSU Gymnasium against Northern State University and University of Mary.
