Beavers struggle on offense in 82-66 loss to Golden Eagles

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The Bemidji State University women’s basketball fell 82-66 to University of Minnesota, Crookston Saturday in a game played at Lysaker Gymnasium. The Beavers are 3-3 overall and 1-1 to start the NSIC season.
The Beavers carried some momentum over from Friday night and opened the first three minutes of the game on a 10-0 run, forcing an early Golden Eagle timeout. The Beavers got the first four points from sophomore Kate Warmack (C, East Grand Forks, Minn.), then 3-pointers from sophomore guard Morgan Lee (Hayward, Wis.) and junior Shannon Thompson (Rosemount, Minn.). BSU forced two turnovers and Warmack had a block in the run as the squad opened the game in a zone defense.

BSU held a lead of 16-4 5:05 into the contest, but the Golden Eagles battled back with a 16-2 run to own their first lead of the game at 20-18 with 7:29 remaining in the first half. The Beavers continued to struggle over the next three minutes as UMC pushed its lead to 10 at 28-18, before sophomore Ellie Wessling (G/F, Winsted Minn.) stopped the slump with a pair of free throws with four left on the clock.

The Golden Eagle lead went to 11 at 33-22 with 1:32 left in the half, but the Beavers won on the last 92 seconds with a 5-2 run, as the scoreboard read 35-27 at the half. Warmack led the Beavers in the half with 10 points. BSU shot just 34.5 percent from the field, while UMC shot at a 37.9 percent clip.

The Beavers couldn’t find a flow in the last 15 minutes of the first half and that trend continued in the second half as the Golden Eagles pushed their lead to 17 at 46-29 3:46 into the frame. BSU started a full court press with 12:17 left in regulation, down 52-35. The move created some havoc for UMC, but the Beavers just couldn’t get the deficit below 13, en route to the 16 point loss.

Wessling led the Beavers with 13 points and five rebounds. Warmack added 12 points and Thompson posted 11 with three rebounds and three assists. BSU finished the game shooting 37.0 percent from the field.

The Beavers continue their season-long four-game NSIC road trip Dec. 9-10 at Winona State University and Upper Iowa University.
