BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Gymnasium) -- Turnovers cost the Bemidji State University women’s basketball team Friday night in a 77-52 loss to Wayne State College at BSU Gymnasium. The Beavers (4-17, 3-14 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) gave away 23 turnovers which led to 23 points for the Wildcats (19-6, 13-4 NSIC) in the loss.
Bemidji State forced Wayne State to shoot 1-for-6 from the field to begin the game, while senior guard Mikayla Larson took a defensive rebound down the court to give BSU its largest lead of the night, 6-2. Turnovers began to impact the game as the Beavers gave away six turnovers and six points off turnovers in each of the first two quarters.
Coming out of a 34-24 deficit at halftime, the Beavers were able to cut the deficit down to eight points twice, the last coming on a layup by senior forward Sam Adamich and assisted by sophomore guard Erica Gartner. Wayne State came back with a 10-1 run, forcing Bemidji State to three turnovers and one missed field goal during the run, to take a 17-point, 36-29 lead. Wildcats guard Kacie O’Connor sank three straight 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to put WSC up 25 points during its final route of the game.
Senior center Sierra Senske and freshman center Taylor Bray each led the Beavers with 10 points while Senske and Larson each led with six rebounds. Bemidji State finished the game shooting 36 percent from the field, 27 percent from beyond the arc and 64 percent from the free throw line. On the night, BSU gave up 23 points off 23 turnovers but outrebounded WSC, 38-37.
Bemidji State closes out the weekend at home Saturday with a 4 p.m. tip-off against No. 7 Augustana University.
