Weiland selected as Bemidji State Women’s Basketball assistant coach

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University women’s basketball Head Coach Chelsea DeVille has selected Justin Weiland to take over the program’s second assistant coach position. Weiland joins BSU after serving as head coach for the Ellsworth Community College women’s basketball program for the 2017-18 season.

“I am grateful to be adding Justin to our women’s basketball program,” DeVille said. “He has valuable experience in both AAU and Junior College coaching that will help both in our on-court growth and recruiting efforts.”

Weiland, a native of New Berlin, Wis., spent two seasons with the Panthers, one as an assistant before taking over the head coach duties in 2017. ECC was tied for its conference lead in blocks per game with 3.3. He signed four incoming freshmen and one walk-on to join ECC during his only season as the program's head coach.

Weiland coached at Kettle Moraine High School for two seasons as the JV and freshman girls' basketball coach prior to joining ECC. He was also head coach for the girls U14, U15 and U17 teams for three years for the Wisconsin Basketball Academy's Prestige.

While attending University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Weiland was a practice player for the women's basketball program for one season. He graduated from UW-Milwaukee in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in political science.

Nestled in Northern Minnesota’s wooded region and located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, Bemidji State University sponsors 15 varsity athletic programs with NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey membership in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while its 13 NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
