BISMARCK, N.D. (Riverwood Golf Course) -- Bemidji State University senior Kristi Buerkle (Stacy, Minn.) led the BSU cross country team to third place Friday in the University of Mary Open at Riverwood Golf Course in Bismarck, N.D.
Buerkle, logged a season-best 24:12.54 to finish the 6,000-meter race in thirteenth place individually and pace the contingent of Beavers. Despite trimming more then 30 seconds from her last performance, the senior finished 2:32.26 off the pace set by U-Mary’s Melissa Agnew (21:44.90), who gained the top individual honor and led the hosting Marauders to the team title.
The Beavers completed the race with 68 team points, 11 points behind Presentation College and 53 off the pace set by U-Mary which turned in a perfect 15 to capture the team title.
In all, Bemidji State had seven runners finish the race, while it place two participants among the top 20. In addition to Buerkle, junior Kirsten Maras (Jr., Anoka, Minn.) posted a 25:05.50 to occupy 20th place, while Ali Hougen (Jr., Bemidji, Minn.) was less than three seconds behind (25:08.40) to take 21st.
Each of BSU’s competitors improved upon her last 6,000-meter time, showing positive signs for what is to come.
The U-Mary Open serves as the final tune up for the 2010 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Championships slated for Nov. 6 in Wayne, Neb.
