BSU golfers compete in Upper Iowa Spring Invite

IOWA CITY, Iowa (Finkbine Golf Course) -- The Bemidji State University men’s and women’s golf teams competed in the Upper Iowa Spring Invite in Iowa City, Iowa this past weekend. The Beavers men posted a two-day total of 621 (+45) to take home the team title while the women shot a two-day total of 783 (+207) to finish eighth at the par-72 Finkbine Golf Course.

In their first competition of the 2008-09 spring schedule, the Bemidji State women stayed consistent throughout the invite as they shot a one day total of 391 and a two day total of 392, but was unable to catch Minnesota State University, Moorhead (753/+177) which took seventh in the team competition.

Individually, Jenna Schurman (Sr., Sauk Centre, Minn.) turned in the Beavers’ best tournament card posting a two day total of 94-91--185 (+41) to tie for 27th place. Marissa Mackedanz (Jr., Paynesville, Minn.) was a close second as she fired a two day total of 96-98--194 (+50) placing in a tie for 33rd.

Upper Iowa University took two of its five team scores from the top two spots on the leader board. Rachael Schmidt and Rochelle Schmidt captured medallist honors both recording a 36-hole total of 74-77--151 (+7) to lead all players. The duo paced the hosting Peacocks to the team title with a 646 (+70) and a 23-shot advantage over the rest of the field.

On the men’s side of things, Mtich Mackedanz (Sr., Paynesville, Minn.) came from behind to take home medallist honors. Mackedanz came into the second day of competition tied for fourth, four strokes off the top of the leader board. Mackedanz fired a one-over par, 73, four strokes better than any other two day total to earn top honors firing a 36-hole total of 75-73--148 (+4).

Mackedanz’s mark paced a BSU squad that finished the 36-hole event in first place, just two strokes ahead of Southwest Baptist 623 (+47).

Also carding scores for the Beavers were: James Foss and Casey Hill, both turned in a two day total of 148 to tie for 13th overall while Derek Harris (160, +16) tied for 23rd and Jesse Nelson tied for 37th (164, +20). Individually, Daniel Menton shot a 159 (+15) to tie for 18th while Josh Dale fired a 166 (+22) to finish the event tied for 46th.

The BSU men are back in action this weekend (Apr. 10-11) when they compete in the second round of the NSIC Tournament in Lake City, Minn. at The Jewel Golf Course. The women will be back in action in two weeks when they travel to Lake City, Minn. to compete in the Maverick Invitational on Apr. 18-19 at The Jewel Golf Course.

Bemidji State University, located in Bemidji, Minn., is an NCAA Division II institution and a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
