The BSU women’s hockey team announced the addition of a pair of goaltenders for the 2012-13 season. The Beavers signed transfer Abby Ryplanski (G, Winnipeg, Manitoba) from Niagara University to a Financial Aid Agreement, while Alexane Rodrigue (G, Monkland, Ontario) inked a National Letter of Intent to play for Bemidji State.

Bemidji State University’s Zuzana Tomcikova (Sr., Bratislava, Slovakia) and James Ellisor (Sr., Glendale, Ariz.) were named as the 2011-12 Student-Athletes of the Year and Rachel Craig (Fr., MB, Wadena, Minn.) and Dermaine Crockrell (Jr., G, Mesa, Ariz.) earned recognition as 2011-12 Newcomers of the Year Thursday at Sanford Center as the University’s honored players and coaches as its annual Student-Athlete Appreciation Banquet.

The University of North Dakota used two first period goals to gain early momentum and take down the Bemidji State University women’s hockey team 3-1 Friday afternoon at Ralph Engelstad Arena in the first round of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs. Bemidji State falls to 17-16-3 with Friday’s loss. North Dakota improves to 21-10-3. UND is now 4-1-0 against the Beavers this season.

The Bemidji State women’s hockey team returned to the ice after a 25-day hiatus hosting Minnesota State, Mankato on Friday night at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse. The Mavericks erased a two-goal lead by the Beavers to send the game into overtime. After a scoreless overtime the Mavericks went on to win the shootout 2-1 in three rounds.

BSU freshman goaltender Zuzana Tomcikova (Bratislava, Slovakia) did a phenomenal job in 60 minutes of work between the pipes for the road green and white, as she saw 54 shots and broke her career high for single-game saves with 49.

The Beavers held Minnesota to just one goal on nine shots in the first period, but the Gophers used a five-goal second period to gain their 19th victory of the season, 7-0 over the Bemidji State.

The Bemidji State University women’s hockey won game two of the WCHA series versus St. Cloud State today at the John Glas Fieldhouse. BSU’s offense exploded for a season-high six goals and 15 points. Sophomore Katie Ward led the scoring attack with four points, doubling her season output. She got the Beavers on the board early in the second period after the teams skated to a scoreless first period. “We needed someone to step up and that is exactly what Katie did today,” commented BSU head coach Bruce Olson. “She has great hands on her and is a great player.”

BSU battled back to tie the game at 1-1 late in the second, but the Sioux scored early in the third to put the nail in the Beaver’s coffin and beat Bemidji State for the first time in the series history.

For the second straight game the Bemidji State University women’s hockey team came out of the gates quickly and for the second straight game the outcome has been good. In the first 10 games of the season the Beavers were out scored 11-3 in the first period of play and went 2-4-2 over that stretch. In the last two games the Beavers have out scored their opponents 3-0 in the first period and have a record of 1-0-1 in those games.

It should come as no surprise that Bemidji State (3-5-3, 3-3-2 WCHA) and Minnesota (9-0-1, 7-0-1 WCHA) ended this afternoon’s contest in a 2-2 draw at Ridder Arena. The 4-1 Beaver setback yesterday was a rare occurrence as four of the past six meetings have ended in a tie or a one-goal contest. In fact, the Beavers handed Minnesota its last league tie on Jan. 12, 2002 in Bemidji.
Bemidji State led after periods one (1-0) and two (2-1) and held a slim 14-13 shot advantage after the second frame. Overall, BSU head coach Bruce Olson enjoyed his team’s effort out on the ice against one of the nation’s powerhouse programs.
