A week after facing No. 2 University of Wisconsin, the Bemidji State women’s ice hockey team travels to play No. 1 University of Minnesota this weekend in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action. The series will commence at 7:07 p.m. Friday with the series finale scheduled for 4:07 p.m. Saturday at Ridder Arena.

The Ohio State University’s Julia McKinnon netted a hat-trick to lead OSU over the Bemidji State University women’s ice hockey team Friday evening, 5-1. The loss was not only snapped BSU’s four-game winning streak but it is also the Beavers’ first loss of the season.

Bemidji State University Director of Athletics Tracy Dill today announced James Scanlan as head coach of the BSU women’s ice hockey program. Scanlan, an 18-year high school educator, coach and administrator, was a two-time All-American goaltender at Bemidji State leading the Beavers to a pair of NAIA national titles.

The Bemidji State men’s and women’s ice hockey teams have again met the Academic Progress Rate standards set fourth by the NCAA. These scores provide performance benchmarks for all NCAA Division I programs under the Association’s standards for academic progress and performance beginning with data from the 2009-13.

More than 400 attendees and 100 Bemidji State University student-athletes gathered at the Sanford Center Saturday night for the inaugural Green & White Dinner and Auction to Benefit BSU Athletics. Net proceeds from tickets, bids on auction items, as well as other activities, totaled more than $104,000 and included individual donations totaling $21,800 to “Build a Scholarship.”

The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team garnered its highest ranking in program history as it was slotted eighth in the USCHO.com poll released Monday morning. This is the second time this season BSU has been in the top 10 in the USCHO.com after being ranked in a tie for 10th with Harvard University the week of Oct. 31. Monday’s poll marks the Beavers second time in the top 10 of any major women’s hockey poll in the program’s history.

The University of Minnesota received the other two first-place votes.

The Bemidji State women’s hockey team returned to the ice after a 25-day hiatus hosting Minnesota State, Mankato on Friday night at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse. The Mavericks erased a two-goal lead by the Beavers to send the game into overtime. After a scoreless overtime the Mavericks went on to win the shootout 2-1 in three rounds.

BSU freshman goaltender Zuzana Tomcikova (Bratislava, Slovakia) did a phenomenal job in 60 minutes of work between the pipes for the road green and white, as she saw 54 shots and broke her career high for single-game saves with 49.

Sophomore Katie Ward led the scoring attack with four points, doubling her season output. She got the Beavers on the board early in the second period after the teams skated to a scoreless first period. “We needed someone to step up and that is exactly what Katie did today,” commented BSU head coach Bruce Olson. “She has great hands on her and is a great player.”

In the first 10 games of the season the Beavers were out scored 11-3 in the first period of play and went 2-4-2 over that stretch. In the last two games the Beavers have out scored their opponents 3-0 in the first period and have a record of 1-0-1 in those games.

It should come as no surprise that Bemidji State (3-5-3, 3-3-2 WCHA) and Minnesota (9-0-1, 7-0-1 WCHA) ended this afternoon’s contest in a 2-2 draw at Ridder Arena. The 4-1 Beaver setback yesterday was a rare occurrence as four of the past six meetings have ended in a tie or a one-goal contest. In fact, the Beavers handed Minnesota its last league tie on Jan. 12, 2002 in Bemidji. Bemidji State led after periods one (1-0) and two (2-1) and held a slim 14-13 shot advantage after the second frame. Overall, BSU head coach Bruce Olson enjoyed his team’s effort out on the ice against one of the nation’s powerhouse programs.
