BEMIDJI, Minn. - The University of North Dakota netted three first period goals to knock off the Bemidji State women's hockey team 5-2 in a non-conference tilt Friday night at the John Glas Fieldhouse. The Beavers are now 2-4-1 in non-Western Collegeiate Hockey Association games this season.

The Fighting Sioux came out firing in the opening stanza, as UND rattled off three goals on nine shots. Meaghan Nelson started the scoring for North Dakota with her fourth tally of the season less than two minutes into the contest to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Jessica Kovacevich lengthened the Fighting Sioux advantage to 2-0 at 6:17 of the period with a power-play goal, her first of the season. Stasia Bakhit lit the lamp once more at 14:36 of the first session to stage a 3-0 lead for North Dakota.

Despite allowing a fourth UND goal by Liz Funk less than a minute into the second period, the Beavers made the game interesting just minutes later. Frosh Helena Tageson put BSU on the board with its first shorthanded goal of the season at the 5:07 mark of the period off an assist from Kelly Hart to cut North Dakota's lead to 4-1. Tageson's marker was her fourth of the year, while Hart received her team-leading seventh assist on the goal.

The Beavers struck again at 6:22 of the period, as sophomore Carly Napier beat UND goaltender Amber Hasbargen with a high wrist shot from just inside the right circle to register her fourth score of the season, putting BSU within two goals of North Dakota. Assistant captain Guylaine Hache was credited with her second helper of the 2003-04 campaign on Napier's lamplighter.

UND would put the game away early in the final period of regulation, however, as Stasia Bakhit netted her second power-play tally of the game at the 3:55 mark, giving the Fighting Sioux a 5-2 lead that they would not relinquish.

The power-play numbers reveal missed opportunities for the Beavers, as the home team finished zero- for-six, compared to North Dakota's two-for-six clip.

Sophomore netminder Jill Luebke made 23 stops in the loss for BSU and she is now 3-10-1 on the year. Amber Hasbargen gloved 21 saves for the Fighting Sioux and her record moves to 3-6-1.

Bemidji State is now 4-16-1 on the season and 2-2-1 all-time against North Dakota. UND moves to 7-13-2 on the year. The two teams will finish off their two game series Sunday, Jan. 18 in Grand Forks, ND, at Ralph Engelstad Arena. The puck will drop at 2:05 p.m..
