Friday, May 29, 2009
BEMIDJI, Minn. - Bemidji State University women’s hockey defenseman Brooke Collins (Sr., Pilot Mound, Manitoba) has been selected to the ESPN The Magazine / College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) University Division All-District V Second Team. This is Collins’ first time being named to a CoSIDA academic team.

Collins joins Jenny Shaugnessy, Gigi Marvin and Meredith McCarthy - all from University of Minnesota - as the only female players from the Western Collegiate Hockey Association to earn a spot on a University Division squad.

The lone captain on the 2008-09 squad, Collins buoyed the Beavers from the blue line in all 36 games. She played in all 144 games she was eligible for during her career, which broke both the consecutive games played and overall games played school records.

Collins finished this past season with one goal and three assists, giving her six goals and 21 assists for 27 points in her career. Her assists were second-most in BSU history by a defenseman, her points were third-most by a BSU defenseman and her goals were fourth most.

Collins carries a 3.82 grade point average in pre-pharmacy.

She was named a WCHA Scholar Athlete each of the past three years, and has been named Academic All-WCHA the last three seasons.

Collins joins BSU men’s hockey defenseman Cody Bostock (Sr., Salmon Arm, British Columbia) and center Travis Winter (Sr., St. Cloud, Minn.) as the most recent recipients of this award. The trio join soccer standout Alysha Domiano (So., Dayton, Minn.), who earned Third-Team All-District V at the conclusion of the fall soccer campaign.

BSU has had at least one student-athlete named to an all-district team in each of the last seven years and boasts 13 academic All-America selections dating back to the 1970s.

The CoSIDA Academic All-District Teams are selected by a vote of the 2,200-member CoSIDA organization. To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. Sports Information Directors nominate eligible athletes from their schools, who are then voted onto the All-District teams. First-Team All-District honorees advance to the Academic All-America ballot. The program honors over 800 student-athletes around the nation each year, and since the program’s inception in 1952 over 16,000 have been named to Academic All-America Teams

Bemidji State, located in Bemidji, Minn., is a member of NCAA Division I and competes within the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
