MADISON, Wis. — Sophomore goaltender Zuzana Tomcikova (Bratislava, Slovakia) was recognized by the Western Collegiate Hockey Association for the fourth time this season for her efforts in the Jan. 15-16 weekend against the No. 2 University of Minnesota being named Co-Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 20.

Behind the play of Tomcikova, Bemidji State limited the number-three scoring offense in the nation to just two goals all weekend. Coming into the weekend, Minnesota was averaging 3.5 goals per game.

In Friday’s game she turned away 25 shots to help send the game into overtime.

On Saturday she topped her performance from the night before stopping 44 of 45 shots, including an incredible series of saves at the end of the game. With under 30 seconds left in regulation, Kelli Blankenship’s shot on goal was kicked out to Tomcikova’s right to a wide-open Emily West. As West put the puck back on net, Tomcikova got her right leg on it, stopping and covering the puck for a face off.

On the weekend she stopped 7 of 10 shoot-out attempts. Tomcikova is now fifth in the nation in save percentage (.941) and third in saves (633).

This weekend Ohio State hosts Bemidji State at the OSU Ice Rink on Friday evening at 6:07 p.m. CT and Saturday afternoon at 1:07 p.m. CT. The Beavers are currently tied for third place with the University of Wisconsin. The OSU series will be the last of the regular season for Tomcikova, who will leave next Sunday to join the Slovakian Olympic team.
