MADISON, Wis. —The Western Collegiate Hockey Association announced today that Bemidji State University women’s hockey goaltender Zuzana Tomcikova (So., Bratislava, Slovakia) has been named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 14-20.
Tomcikova recorded her fourth collegiate shutout making 35 saves against defending national champion and fourth-ranked Wisconsin, 1-0, in Bemidji State’s WCHA 2009-10 season opener last Saturday in Coleraine, Minn.
On Sunday she stopped another blistering 38 shots, including 21 in the first period, in a 3-1 loss to Wisconsin in Bemidji, giving her a weekend save percentage of .927.
For the weekend, Tomcikova faced a total of 76 shots, stopping 73, recording a .961 save percentage. Of the 73 saves, 39 were off of shots taken from inside the slot.
This is Tomcikova’s fourth WCHA Defensive Player of the Week award in her career. Last year she garnered the award a WCHA-record three times in a row.
