Food Network to profile legendary diner with Bemidji State connection
BEMIDJI, Minn. – The family of Bemidji State University women’s ice hockey forward Sadie Lundquist (So., Cloquet, Minn.) has owned and operated a small, but well-known, diner in Cloquet, Minn. for the past 50 years. The Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” and host Guy Fieri will feature a recent visit to Gordy’s Hi-Hat during the episode entitled “You Called It” Monday at 9 p.m. CST.

The Food Network spent nearly 20 hours filming over the course of two days to prepare its feature of the restaurant. During the first day of taping the show profiled the restaurant along with its cooking methods. On the second day, Fieri was on site to sample the food and interview Gordy and Marilyn Lundquist, Sadie’s grandparents, who have served as centerpieces of the family business since opening the Northern Minnesota landmark in 1960.

“This is the third restaurant my grandparents have opened and it has clearly been their most successful one,” said Sadie when asked what the recognition means to her. “It’s such an honor for them to be recognized not only for how long they have been working, but for the quality and effort they deliver to their customers.”

A local favorite, Gordy’s Hi-Hat has been doing things the same since its doors first opened, still hand-making patties from day-fresh ground beef.

Sadie’s father, Dan, has managed the bulk of the workload in the restaurant over the last 20 years, but Gordy, who will turn 83 later this year, and Marilyn, 81, are both still active in the business.

Usually working behind the front counter taking customer’s orders, Sadie has had a hand in the family business since she started high school.  Since Gordy’s Hi-Hat is open only during Northern Minnesota’s mild spring, summer and fall months, the summer job has been a perfect match for Sadie, allowing her to focus on school and hockey while in season.

“It’s almost like we purposefully close for the hockey season, being that we’re such a hockey family. The dates we decide to open and close the restaurant depend upon the weather. This year we opened in mid-March and we’ll probably close in late-September or early-October.”

“Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” is a Food Network series focusing on American cuisine. Produced by Page Productions, the program travels around the United States in search of the best drive-in restaurants, diners and dive bars.

The program focuses on small independent eateries featuring traditional American-style cuisine, regional styles, or ethnic specialties.  Most often, restaurants the show feature use fresh ingredients, home-style recipes, and gourmet culinary approaches to what is usually considered non-gourmet food.

“Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” airs on the Food Network Mondays at 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., Fridays at 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
