Bauerfeld and Cassidy garner Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week honors
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Annie Bauerfeld (Sr., F, Woodbury, Minn.) and Patrick Cassidy (Sr., F, 6-6, St. Paul, Minn.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic accomplishments during the week of Nov. 22-28.

Bauerfeld recorded two points (0-2=2) Nov. 26-27 at the Ohio State University. In addition, she led the BSU women’s ice hockey team in shots with 12. She assisted on each of the Beavers’ goals in a 2-2 tie and shootout loss to the No. 9/10 Buckeyes Friday.  In the second period, Bauerfeld made a cross-ice pass to find Emily Erickson alone on the power-play for a breakaway to tie the game at 1-1. Just two minutes later Bauerfeld recorded her second helper of the evening on an Allie Duelleman (Fr., D, Maplewood, Minn.) marker. The two-point effort was her third multi-point game of the season.

This week’s award marks the second occasion that Bauerfeld has been recognized with Beaver Pride’s weekly award, while she is the third women’s hockey player to be honored this season.

Cassidy scored a team-high 18 points as the BSU men’s basketball team defeated University of Wisconsin-Stout in dramatic fashion 89-87 Nov. 23 and won its home opener for the first time since the 2003-04 season. Cassidy provided senior leadership by hitting a 3-pointer with 1:05 remaining in regulation to tie the game 87-87. A defensive stop left the Beavers with 38 seconds to get a go-ahead bucket. After wasting 29 seconds off the clock, junior Bryce Tesdahl (G, 6-3, Crosby, Minn.) found Cassidy under the basket where he was fouled. Cassidy knocked down both free throws to give BSU the lead and the eventual victory. The 3-pointer was just his 10th of his career. Cassidy finished the game 7-for-9 (77.8%) from the field and 3-of-4 (75.0%) from the charity stripe. He added five rebounds, one block and one assist in the game.

Cassidy’s selection as Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week marks the second consecutive week in which a BSU men’s basketball player has been honored.  He follows the Nov. 24 recognition of James Ellisor (Jr., F, 6-5, Glendale, Ariz).  It also marks the second time the senior has been named Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week.

The Bemidji State men’s basketball team is 3-1 overall and enters the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) portion of its schedule this weekend riding a three-game winning streak.  The Beavers open league play Friday with an 8 p.m. affair versus MSU Moorhead and will cap the weekend with a 6 p.m. opening-tip versus the University of Minnesota, Crookston at the BSU Gymnasium.

Bauerfeld and the 6-6-2 BSU women’s hockey team return to the Bemidji Regional Event Center and look to improve upon their 4-4-2-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) record in a league series versus No. 7 University of Minnesota.  The puck is set to hit the ice at 2:07 p.m. both Friday and Saturday.
