Winter training update with Erin Cody
BLAINE, Minn. – Bemidji State University women’s hockey player Erin Cody (Sr., Fwd., Roseville, Minn.) received one of the biggest honors of her hockey career when she was invited to participate with the 2010 USA Hockey Women’s Winter Training Camp held in Blaine, Minn. over Dec. 27-31. The camp serves as a tryout and training session for the U.S. Women’s National Team.

After spending time with her family for Christmas, Cody has now been spending all her time this past week with her fellow campmates. Staying in dorms, the players have remained busy with a rigorous schedule that includes: team meals, on-ice training, off-ice conditioning, team meetings, and scrimmages.

“It’s been a lot of fun and it’s definitely been challenging,” Cody commented about her time spent so far at the camp. “It has been great playing with all the talented players here.”

The camp roster features 17 Olympians including four-time Olympians, Angela Ruggiero and Jenny Potter, and also 13 current WCHA players.

“It’s been a little bit intimidating skating with them, but you just have to remember that you’re here for a reason. Every day you’re skating with someone new, whether it’s Gigi Marvin or Jenny Potter, and it’s been a lot of fun getting the puck back from them.”

The camp also features a very respected coaching staff with Katey Stone, the head women’s ice hockey coach at Harvard University, leading the camp as head coach, while Mark Hudak, head women’s ice hockey coach at Dartmouth College, Hilary Witt, assistant women’s ice hockey coach at Northeastern University, and Joel Johnson, assistant coach for the University of Minnesota women’s ice hockey team also serve as assistant coaches.

“The coaches do everything a bit differently and learning their styles of play, like a new forecheck or a neutral zone defensive coverage, will be great to take back with me to BSU.”

Even though she has to miss the first week of training with the BSU women’s hockey team back in Bemidji, Cody appreciates what a great time she has had while attending the camp.

“It’s been a great opportunity, I wouldn’t trade it for anything and I can’t wait to get back to my team and look forward to working out with them.”
