Special teams lend to season sweep of Huskies
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The special teams play for the Bemidji State University women’s hockey team went 1-3 on the power play and killed off all five penalties in Saturday’s contest against St. Cloud State as the Beavers pick up their sixth straight over the Huskies and claim the regular season sweep.

“We figured out how to get a couple of goals, the power-play goal was huge and we got it done in a hurry there,” said head coach Steve Sertich. “To win in this league your special teams have to get their job done. Our penalty kill was perfect and a lot of those same players were on the power play as well.”

Emily Erickson (R-So., Fwd., Coleraine, Minn.) led the Beavers with two goals on the day, scoring the first and last goals for BSU. Her first goal came on the power play in the second period. Just seven seconds into the first power play of the game for the Beavers, Erickson netted a goal that she had to bat out of the air. Erin Johnson (Sr., Fwd., Farmington, Minn.) passed the puck over to Annie Bauerfeld (Sr., Fwd., Woodbury, Minn.) who then threw it on net. The puck got deflected on the way to the net and Erickson, who was sitting atop the crease, reacted quickly to hit it out of midair to put it past SCSU tender Ashley Nixon.

Bemidji State kept up its attack and two minutes later netted a second goal of the game, this time from the stick of Johnson. Bauerfeld and Marlee Wheelhouse (Jr., Def., Crookston, Minn.) teamed up to get Johnson the puck at the bottom of the right circle. Johnson then looked to pass the puck back to Bauerfeld, but her pass ended up hitting off the backside of Nixon’s skate and going in for a Beaver goal.

The Beavers would then end the second period with a 2-0 lead. In the third, St. Cloud State found its first and only goal of the game when Julia Gilbert netted her third goal of the season off a scramble in front of the BSU net. However, the Beavers would quickly respond with their third goal. The duo of Sadie Lundquist (So., Fwd., Cloquet, Minn.) and Erin Cody (Sr., Fwd., Roseville, Minn.) combined with Erickson to give Bemidji State back its two-goal lead. Lundquist had the puck behind the net and made a great centering pass in front to a wide-open Erickson. Erickson then ripped a one-timer past Nixon for her 11th goal of the season.

Zuzana Tomcikova (Jr., G., Bratislava, Slovakia) was back in net for the Beavers and turned away 22 shots on goal to record her ninth win of the season. She made nine saves in the first period, with two saves coming within the first half minute of the game.

“St. Cloud State had a couple shifts where they were all over us, and Tomcikova came through when she had to,” Sertich commented.

On the weekend BSU’s power-play unit score on two of five power plays, while its PK unit stymied all 10 opportunities for the Huskies.

The Beavers now have 29 points in the WCHA and improve to 10-7-3 (8-5-3-2 WCHA) on the season. The Huskies now have a 23-game winless streak that spans back to the playoffs of last season when the Beavers ended SCSU’s postseason hopes on back-to-back losses.

Bemidji State returns to the ice next weekend with a pair of road games against the University of North Dakota. Friday’s, Jan. 15, game will be held in Roseau, Minn. at 7:07 p.m. while Saturday’s game will be in Grand Forks, N.D. at 4:07 p.m.
