Johnson and Tesdahl garner Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week honors
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Erin Johnson (Sr., F, 5-6, Farmington, Minn.) and Bryce Tesdahl (Jr., G, 6-3, 195, Crosby, Minn.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic accomplishments during the week of Jan. 17-23.

Johnson had a hand in both of the BSU women’s ice hockey team’s game-winning goals Jan. 21-22 as the Beavers swept Minnesota State University, Mankato, 2-0 and 3-1. On Friday, Johnson opened the scoring in the second period scoring her fourth goal of the season on a breakaway. The goal would stand as the game-winner in the shutout.  Johnson also assisted on Annie Bauerfeld’s (Sr., F, 5-6, Woodbury, Minn.) game-winning goal in the first period of Saturday’s contest just minutes after pitching in on the Beavers’ first goal of the afternoon.  She finished the weekend with 1-2=3 points to lead the Beavers.

In the first six games of 2011, Johnson has contributed to nine of the Beavers’ 15 goals, scoring three and assisting on six. She has recorded at least one point in each of the past six games.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award marks the first of Johnson’s career, while it is the sixth time a member of the BSU women’s ice hockey team has earned the award in 2010-11.

Tesdahl led the BSU men’s basketball team averaging 9.5 points, 7.5 assists and 7.0 rebounds in an 0-2 road weekend at No. 15 Minnesota State (87-82) and Southwest Minnesota State University (78-62). His first assist versus the Mavericks, established BSU’s career assists record (since 1976). The assist marked the 315th in the junior’s career, surpassing David Lee (1984-88). Tesdahl was one assist shy of a double-double Friday, scoring 10 points on 4-of-7 (57.1%) from the field with nine assists. At SMSU Saturday, the junior scored nine points, posted seven rebounds and added six assists. On the weekend he had four steals and shot 80 percent from the charity stripe (8-of-10) with an average of 36.5 minutes played.

Tesdahl leads the league and sits fourth in the nation in assists this season with 107, averaging 6.29 per game.

The award marks the second occasion Tesdahl has been recognized by Beaver Pride.  He was also named Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week Dec. 9, 2009.  This week stands and the fifth time this season a member of the BSU men’s basketball team has been selected for the honor.  Tesdahl follows Patrick Cassidy (Dec. 1) and James Ellisor (Nov. 24, Dec. 15 and Jan. 12).

The Bemidji State men’s basketball team (7-10; 4-9 NSIC) looks to end a four-game losing skid this weekend as it returns the BSU Gymnasium to host the University of Mary and Northern State University Jan. 28-29.  The Beavers open the weekend with an 8 p.m. opening tip Friday and welcome NSU for a 6 p.m. start.

Johnson and the BSU women’s hockey team hits the road for a Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) match up with No. 6 University of Minnesota Duluth Jan. 28-29.  The Beavers now, 12-9-3 overall and 10-7-3-2 in league play, seek their third and fourth straight wins this weekend at UMD.  Both games are set for a 7:07 p.m. opening face-off from recently-opened Amsoil Arena in Duluth, Minn.
