Tomcikova garners MVP honors at 2011 Womens World Championship
ZURICH – Bemidji State University women’s hockey junior goaltender Zuzana Tomcikova (Bratislava, Slovakia) made a total of 237 saves in just five games (47.4 saves per game) for the Slovakia women’s national team being named the tournament MVP of the Top Division at the 2011 IIHF World Women’s Championship. Tomcikova and team Slovakia captured a seventh place finish in the tournament.

Starting off the tournament, Tomcikova made 58 saves against the United States in a game that saw the U.S. skate past Slovakia 5-0. She the bettered her performance turning in 71 saves against Sweden as Slovakia fell 3-0 in the second game of the preliminary round. In the final game of group play, Tomcikova made 48 more saves in a 4-1 defeat against Russia.

Slovakia then squared-off against Kazakhstan in the relegation round, with the loser of the best-of-three series being sent down to the First Division for the 2012 Championships. In game one of the series Tomcikova pitched her first shutout of the tournament turning away 25 shots on goal, backstopping Slovakia to a 1-0 victory. In game two she turned in 35 saves en route to a 2-1 overtime shootout victory.

Tomcikova’s 237 saves were tied for the most of the tournament with Kazakhstan’s Daria Obydennova. Her .948 save percentage was also the fourth best of the tournament. Giving up 13 goals in the five games, she finished the tournament with a 2.56 goals against average.

Tomcikova finished her junior campaign with the Beavers recording a .933 save percentage and a 1.84 goals against average. In conference only games, Tomcikova finished third in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association for both save percentage (.934) and goals against average (1.82). Her six shutouts on the season were the most by any BSU goaltender in a single season. Tomcikova will be returning this fall to complete her senior campaign with Bemidji State.
