Rachael Kelly selected as WCHA Newcomer of the Week
MADISON, Wis. - Bemidji State University forward Rachael Kelly (Fr., Rosemount, Minn.), who put BSU ahead 1-0 on their way to a 2-1 victory over No. 2 Minnesota, was named Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Newcomer of the Week as announced by the league office Nov. 2. Kelly joins Erika Wheelhouse (Jr., D, Crookston, Minn.) and Zuzana Tomcikova (Sr., G, Bratislava, Slovakia) as players to earn weekly awards from the WCHA this season.

Kelly scored her fourth goal of her freshman campaign at the 5:36 mark of the second period to put BSU ahead 1-0 early in Saturday’s game. The Beavers would go on to win 2-1 over No. 2 Minnesota to pick up their fourth-ever victory over the Golden Gophers and their fourth win over a top five team during the Steve Sertich era. The upset helped BSU to their first ranking in program history after being picked in a tie for 10th in the latest USCHO.com poll released Monday.

The honor is the first of her career for Kelly, who leads all Bemidji State newcomers with six points (four goals and two assists). Kelly joins Tomcikova and Wheelhouse who both earned WCHA Defensive Player of the Week honors this season. Tomcikova was named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week Oct. 5 after making 54 saves and picking up a win and a shutout against then-No. 10 Providence College. Wheelhouse earned the accolade Oct. 12 after tallying six assists in two games against Ohio State University
