Erika Wheelhouse selected as WCHA Defensive Player of the Week
MADISON, Wis. - Bemidji State University women’s hockey player Erika Wheelhouse (Jr., D, Crookston, Minn.) was selected as the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player of the Week after tallying a goal and three assists as BSU picked up a split against No. 6 University of North Dakota. The honor is the second of the season for Wheelhouse who was selected Defensive Player of the Week Oct. 12 after notching six assists versus Ohio State University. Zuzana Tomcikova (Sr., G, Bratislava, Slovakia) and Rachael Kelly (Fr., F, Rosemount, Minn.) have also received weekly awards from the conference office this season.

In Friday’s 5-2 loss, the junior defenseman picked up a goal and an assist in a game dubbed “The Wheelhouse Homecoming” due to the game being played in Crookston, the hometown of Erika and her sister Marlee Wheelhouse (Sr., D). Saturday, Wheelhouse notched two assists as the Beavers picked up a 3-2 victory over the Fighting Sioux, a game that would help lift BSU to their second ranking in the polls this week. BSU is currently ranked in both the and USA Today/USA Hockey Magainze poll, marking the first time in program history the team has earned recognition in the top 10 of both polls.

This week’s honor is the third of Wheelhouse’s career as she was named WCHA Rookie of the Week Jan. 13, 2010.
