Rachael Kelly garners WCHA Newcomer of the Week laurels
MADISON, Wis. - Bemidji State University forward Rachael Kelly (Fr., Rosemount, Minn.), who tallied two assists including firing a pass to help Danielle Williams (So., F, Waconia, Minn.) score the game-winner in a 4-0 victory over Minnesota State University, was named Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Newcomer of the Week as announced by the league office Jan. 11. The honor is the second of the year for Kelly who was selected WCHA Newcomer of the Week Nov. 2 after scoring a key goal in BSU’s 2-1 win over then-No. 2 University of Minnesota Oct. 29.

Kelly is the one of three players to be honored by the conference office this season with a weekly award. Erika Wheelhouse (Jr., D, Crookston, Minn.) has earned WCHA Defensive Player of the Week twice (Oct. 12, Nov. 30) while Zuzana Tomcikova (Sr., G, Bratislava, Slovakia) was selected WCHA Defensive Player of the Week Oct. 5 for her play between the pipes against then-No. 9 Providence College in the opening series of the season.

In addition to Kelly’s assist on the game-winning goal, the freshman tallied a helper on Marlee Wheelhouse’s (Sr., D, Crookston, Minn.) rocket from the right circle to give BSU a 2-0 lead over Minnesota State. It was Kelly’s win of a face-off that set up M. Wheelhouse’s netter. Prior to Saturday’s performance, Kelly had gone over two months without a point missing most of the time due to an injury suffered right after the first series against the Mavericks.
