Karvinen second period hat-trick leads UND past BSU 5-2
GRAND FORKS, N.D. -  North Dakota used three second-period goals from Michelle Karvinen as she tallied a hat trick to send Univeristy of North Dakota past Bemidji State University 5-2 Friday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena. The Beavers fall to 14-13-3 (8-13-2 WCHA). North Dakota improves to 17-9-2 (13-8-2 WCHA). The Beavers took the early advantage but gave up four-straight UND goals in the loss. The losing effort also continues BSU’s struggles in the first game of a series as Bemidji State has now lost nine straight games to open a series. The Beavers are 3-10-2 in the first game of a series this season.

The BSU power play which came into the game as the fifth-best unit in the nation struggled on the night going 0-for-9 on the man advantage. The game was highly penalized as UND was called for 13 penalties to BSU’s 10 (23 total).

Bemidji State’s Emily Erickson (R-Jr., F, Coleraine, Minn.) got the game off to a ferocious pace when she deaked UND defender Margot Miller in order to go in one-on-one where she beat Stephanie Ney for her team-leading 14th goal of the season. The netter came 23 seconds into the contest, the second fastest goal scored from the start of a game in the program’s history. Natasha Kostenko (Fr., F, Fannystelle, Manitoba) played the puck to Erickson off the boards and tallied her seventh assist. Montana Vichorek (Sr., D, Moose Lake, Minn.) notched her 18th assist on the goal. Erickson’s goal moved her into a tie for fourth all-time among BSU goal scorers with 36 career netters.

UND evened the slate at 1-1 at the 16:29 mark of the first period as Josefine Jakobsen tallied her eighth goal of the season as North Dakota found the net on the power play. The goal is only the 17th BSU has given up this season on the penalty kill. Assists went to Michelle Karvinen and Monique Lamoureux-Kolls.

The story of the first period was penalties as each team had three penalties apiece in the opening period for a total of six penalties in the first 20 minutes.

Mid-way through the second period, Marlee Wheelhouse (Sr., D, Crookston, Minn.) went to the penalty box for hooking. After BSU goaltender Zuzana Tomcikova (Sr., G, Bratislava, Slovakia) stopped two Jocelyne Lamoureux shots but was unable to put away the chance from Karvinen who netted her 19th goal of the year. J. Lamoureux picked up her 39th helper on the season. Kelsey Ketcher also had an assist on the goal, her third of the year.

Karvinen tallied her second goal of the period at the 12:48 mark as she played the puck to BSU defenseman Kimberly Lieder (Sr., D, Eagan, Minn.) who attempted to bat the puck down but the puck went into the net past Tomcikova. The goal was Karvinen’s 20th of the season. Alyssa Wiebe and M. Lamoureux-Kolls had assists on the net.

Karvinen added to the UND lead 22 seconds later as she secured the hat trick with her 21st goal of the year. J. Lamouruex had the assist on the goal.

Mid-way through the third period Karvinen was called for a five minute major and the game misconduct for checking for behind forcing her to exit the game. BSU went on a five-minute power-play but was unable to find the net. The UND penalty kill unit did an excellent job keeping the Beavers out of the net as they were 0-for-6 on the power play on the night.

North Dakota iced the game with a short-handed goal with three minutes remaining as Jocelyne Lamoureux found the net for her 28th goal of the season. The assist went to Kayla Berg. The short-handed goal was the fifth of the season allowed by Bemidji State.

The Beavers found the net late to make the score 5-2 but it was too little too late. Whitney Wivoda (Fr., F, Fairbanks, Alaska) found the net for the fifth time this season. Rachael Kelly (Fr., F, Rosemount, Minn.) was credited with her fifth assist of the year. Vichorek added her second assist of the game and her 19th of the season.

Tomcikova had 29 saves and five goals allowed on the night. Stephanie Ney made 21 saves and two goals allowed.

BSU and UND will play at 7:07 p.m. tomorrow at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
