Tomcikova picks up WCHA Co-Defensive Player of the Week laurels
MADISON, Wis. - Bemidji State University goaltender Zuzana Tomcikova (Sr., Bratislava, Slovakia) was selected Western College Hockey Association Co-Defensive Player of the Week by the league office as announced Wednesday afternoon. The honor comes after Tomcikova gave up one goal in two games against No. 9 University of Minnesota Duluth. She splits the honor with Minnesota’s Anne Schleper. Saturday, Tomcikova stopped 20 shots on her way to a 2-0 shutout of the Bulldogs, her fourth blank sheet of the season and the 18th of her career on “Senior Day”.

The honor is the second of the season for the BSU netminder and her 10th of her four-year career as a Beaver. Tomcikova was also selected WCHA Defensive Player of the Week after picking up a shutout of No. 9 Providence College Sept. 30 and helping the Beavers to a victory over the Friars Oct. 1. Her 10 conference honors are the most ever for a Bemidji State University women’s hockey player.

Three players have picked up six conference honors this season for BSU. Erika Wheelhouse (Jr., D, Crookston, Minn.) has twice been selected WCHA Defensive Player of the Week while Rachael Kelly (Fr., F, Rosemount, Minn.) has garnered two nods as WCHA Newcomer of the Week to join Tomcikova’s two honors.

Tomcikova has had a stellar season as she currently leads the nation in saves (898) and is seventh for saves percentage (.931). She has captured every career record in BSU’s history this season and is on the move in the NCAA record books as well. Tomcikova is currently ranked third all-time for games played and minutes played and is tied for third in shutouts. She is also ranked fourth all-time in saves and needs only 19 stops to surpass USA National Team goaltender Molly Schaus (Boston College) in third place.
