Tomcikova and McLeod garner Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week honors
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University athletes Zuzana Tomcikova (Sr., G, Bratislava, Slovakia) and Aaron McLeod (Jr., F, Ottawa, Ontario) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic performances during the week of Feb. 5-12.

Tomcikova gave up one goal Feb. 10-11 the BSU women’s hockey team split a WCHA series with then-No. 9 University of Minnesota Duluth. Tomcikova amassed 45 saves on the weekend. Saturday night, Tomcikova picked up her 11th win of the season while blanking UMD on “Senior Day.” The shutout was the fourth of the season for the senior and the 18th of her career. She stopped 20 shots in the win. Friday, Tomcikova gave up only one goal but BSU was unable to find the net and thus lost to the Bulldogs, 1-0.

She also moved into fourth place all-time in saves in the NCAA with her 20 stops Saturday afternoon.

For her efforts, Tomcikova was also named WCHA Co-Defensive Player of the Week.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection marks the first of the season for Tomcikova and the ninth for a member of the BSU women’s ice hockey team in 2011-12.  Tomcikova follows teammates Emily Erickson (Jr., F. Coleraine, Minn.), who is a three-time recipient (Oct. 19, Nov. 23 and Jan. 18), the Jan. 11 selection Danielle Williams (So., F, Waconia, Minn.), Natasha Kostenko (Fr., F, Fannystelle, Manitoba),who was the Jan. 4 selection, Erika Wheelhouse (Jr., D, Crookston, Minn.), who earned the honor Nov. 30 and Oct. 12, and Montana Vichorek (Sr., D, Moose Lake, Minn.) the Oct. 26 selection.

McLeod assembled back-to-back multi-point games to lead the BSU men’s ice hockey team to a WCHA series sweep over then-No. 10 Colorado College Feb. 10-11. McLeod scored a goal and added an assist in each game posting his fourth and fifth multi-point efforts this season. He finished the weekend with two blocked shots and carried a +3 plus/minus rating.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award is also the first of the season for McLeod, while it marks the sixth time a member of the BSU men’s hockey team has been honored by the organization. He follows Dan Bakala (Sr., G, Calgary, Alberta) the Jan. 4 pick, three-time recipient (Oct. 26, Dec. 7 and Dec. 14) Andrew Walsh (Fr., G, Dawson Creek, British Columbia) and the Dec. 7 selection Brad Hunt (Sr., D, Ridge Meadows, British Columbia).

The BSU women’s hockey team will wrap up the regular-season this weekend at St. Cloud State. Both games, set for SCSU’s National Hockey Center, will commence at 2:07 p.m.

Bemidji State (15-12-3; 9-10-3 WCHA) returns to the road this weekend, making a trip south to Minneapolis, Minn. to face No. 7 University of Minnesota (19-11-1; 15-7-0 WCHA).  The series will be played at Mariucci Arena with both games slated for a 7:07 p.m. opening face off.
