BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) – The 10th-ranked University of North Dakota women’s hockey team completed a two-game sweep of Bemidji State University on Sunday afternoon with a 7-3 victory at the Sanford Center. The loss was the fourth in a row for the Beavers in WCHA and was the team’s sixth consecutive loss against UND.
After Sunday’s contest, BSU is now 2-8-2 on the season with a 1-6-1-0 WCHA record, while North Dakota is now 7-5-0 with a 6-4-0-0 conference ledger. UND’s seven goals was the highest total by either by either team in a single game in 47 all-time meetings and the Beavers’ six goals against in the second period was a season high.
Playing without the services of senior captain and Erika Wheelhouse (Sr., Crookston, Minn.), the team’s leader in blocked shots, Bemidji State started fast after a 3-1 loss in Saturday’s weekend opener.
Just 1:31 into regulation, Saturday goal-scorer Emily Erickson (Sr., F, Coleraine, Minn.) put BSU ahead with her second goal of the season on a two-on-one from fellow senior MacKenzie Thurston (F, Ottawa, Ont.). It was Bemidji State’s fourth 1-0 lead of the season.
North Dakota answered just 39 seconds later, however, when Monique Lamoureux beat BSU goaltender Jessica Havel (Sr., Grand Rapids, Minn.) with a strong shot from the right circle. Lamoureux’s tally capped the scoring in a first period that saw BSU emerge with a 10-8 advantage in shots.
In similar fashion to the first, the second period began with a BSU goal follow by an answer from North Dakota. Working on a power play that carried over from the first period, the Beavers regained the lead when a dump-in by Thurston fooled UND goaltender Shelby Amsley-Benzie and found the back of the net. UND knotted things up only 20 ticks later on Jocelyn Lamoureux first of three goals on the day.
UND pulled ahead 3-2 1:19 after tying the score and padded its lead less than two minutes later. The visitors posted three more goals in the final seven minutes of the frame to make it 7-2. After tying the game at two, Jocelyn Lamoureux sandwiched the final two goals of her hat trick between goals by Michelle Karvinen and Jordan Slavin. Havel was replaced in the cage by freshman Alexane Rodrigue (Monkland, Ont.) after Slavin made it 6-2.
Rodrigue was solid, stopping nine of 10 shots and turning away the final seven UND offerings after Monique Lamoureux completed North Dakota’s scoring at 16:59 of the second period on the man advantage. BSU competed well in the third, but couldn’t cut into its deficit early enough to come back. Sadie Lundquist (Sr., F, Cloquet, Minn.) made it 7-3 with a power-play goal with 1:12 remaining, completing a nice tic-tac-toe play at the side of the net.
Erickson, Thurston, and Lundquist each had a goal and an assist on the afternoon and were the only Beavers to get on the scoresheet. Thurston now leads the team with 10 points on the season, including a career-high three goals. With Rodrigue’s insertion into the game, every player on Bemidji State has now seen the ice at least one time in 2012-13.
Next weekend, the Beavers will head south to face Minnesota State University, Mankato before coming home to host the University of Minnesota Duluth and the University of Minnesota before winter break. BSU will travel to North Dakota for another weekend series in February. That trip will be the only time the Beavers leave the state of Minnesota for the rest of the regular season.
