BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) – The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team battled to a 1-1 tie through regulation Friday afternoon against Ohio State University, but the Buckeyes scored 41 seconds into overtime to earn the win in a 2-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) tilt at the Sanford Center.
The loss eliminates BSU from contending for home ice in the best-of-three first-round WCHA playoff series March 1-3, leaving the Beavers with a 5-18-2 record and a 4-16-2-0 conference ledger. OSU is now 16-9-2 and 11-8-2-2 in the league.
In the opening 20 minutes, each team played conservatively, combining for 13 shots. OSU had seven offerings that went on goal and Hokey Langan and Tina Hollowell each connected with the iron in the frame.
Working on the tail end of the game’s first power play, Ally Tarr broke into the Bemidji State zone and hit a third pipe for the Buckeyes on the first play of the second period.
The Beavers, who blocked 26 shots on the afternoon, kept the game leveled until they were able to break through with the game’s first goal 2:11 into the middle staza.
Natasha Kostenko (So., F, Fannystelle, Manitoba) took a pass from Abby Williams (R-Sr., F, Alexandria, Minn.) in the neutral zone and drove to the OSU net to give BSU the 1-0 lead.
Kostenko now has at least a point in eight of her last 10 games and leads the Beavers with eight goals. Williams has an assist in three of her last six games after going without a point through the season’s first 18 games.
Entering the contest, BSU was 3-2-1 when leading after two period, but the Buckeyes knotted the score just under five minutes into the third. Kim Theut threw the puck on net and Hollowell went upstairs on Bemidji State netminder Abby Ryplanski (So., Winnipeg, Manitoba to knot the score.
Each team had chances to win in regulation, but neither side could convert. MacKenzie Thurston (Sr., F, Ottawa, Ontario) was whistled for a tripping penalty that carried into the first minute of overtime. The Beavers killed off the advantage, but Tarr picked off a BSU breakout pass seconds later and wristed the winning goal past Ryplanski.
After going 0-for-2 on the power play in the 2-1 defeat, BSU has gone nine full games with out a goal on the advantage. The stretch covers 552:29 of game time and 57:24 of time on the man-advantage without a power-play goal and dates back to Dec. 2.
Bemidji State and OSU will complete their regular season series Saturday afternoon at 2:07 at the Sanford Center. The Beavers will then complete the regular season with trips to the University of North Dakota and the University of Minnesota before hosting the University of Wisconsin.
