Bemidji State women's hockey team begins official practice Saturday

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University women’s ice hockey team will begin official practice at the Sanford Center on Saturday morning. The team, entering its 16th season, is now beginning its final stages of preparation for the 2013-14 season.

The practice will be one of several chances in the coming week for this year’s squad to get some of the kinks out and get ready for a bounce-back season. The team will conduct two two-hour practices on Saturday and Sunday and will begin weekday practices from 1:00 to 3:15 p.m. during the next week.

BSU travels to Missouri Sept 27-28 for its first official series of the year against Lindenwood University. Bemidji State will then have three straight home series’ starting with Robert Morris University, Oct. 11-12. Lindenwood will make a return trip to Sanford Center Oct. 18-19. The Beavers open WCHA competition a week later when defending National Champion University of Minnesota comes to town.

This year’s BSU women’s hockey team returns 18 players from 2012-13. The Beavers will have a lot of offense to replace with four of their top five goal scorers no longer with the team. The returners are led by Kaitlyn Tougas (F, 5-4, So., Thunder Bay, Ontario), who was second on the team in scoring last season with seven goals and 14 points.

The captains for BSU this season are Alex Ehlert (D, 5-6, Sr., Portage, Wis.) and Allie Duellman (D, 5-8, Sr., Maplewood, Minn.).

In goal, returning redshirt senior Jessica Havel (5-7, Grand Rapids, Minn.) will look to build upon last season, when she logged shutouts against Minnesota State and Wisconsin. Havel’s overall record last season was 4-14-1. In addition, freshman Brittni Mowat (5-7, Fr., Glenboro, Manitoba) looks to compete for playing time in net for the Beavers.
