Beavers drop home-opener to Robert Morris, 2-1

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team dropped its home opener Friday evening, 2-1, to Robert Morris University. The loss is the first for the Beavers this season after going 1-0-1 in their opening series at Lindenwood University Sept. 27-28.

After a scoreless first frame, the Colonials got the scoring started 3:49 into the second period on a goal that had to be reviewed by the officials. RMU struck again at the 10:04 mark in the period. Going into the third period, the Colonials had a 2-0 lead. The Beavers actually outshot the Colonials 11-5 in the period but no BSU shots found the back of the net.

Both teams had a pair of power-play opportunities in the third period but neither team could score on the man advantage. Tess Dusik (F, 6-0, Sr., R, Oak Bluff, Manitoba) scored the goal for the Beavers with 19:55 gone in the third period. Kaitlyn Tougas (F, 5-4, So., R, Thunder Bay, Ontario) and Hanna Moher (F, 5-6, So., L, Milton Ontario) each had assists on the goal.

After going 2-4 on the power play in its first series of the season, the Beavers did not have same success with a man advantage tonight. BSU had five power-play opportunities and eight shots but could not score.

Brittni Mowat (G, 5-7, Fr., L, Glenboro, Manitoba) had another solid game in between the pipes for the Beavers, with 16 saves on 18 shots for a .889 save percentage. The freshman netminder’s record drops to 1-1-1 on the season.

Bemidji State (1-1-1) will return to action Saturday at 4:07 p.m. versus Robert Morris (2-1-0). The game will have extra significance as the BSU women’s hockey team will be ‘Love for Liliah’ event. The event is geared towards raising awareness for pediatric cancer. The team will wear gold in honor of Jenessa Phillipczyk’s (F, 5-7, So., L, Stillwater, Minn.) niece Liliah, who has neuroblastoma.
