BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team lost to University of North Dakota Friday afternoon at Sanford Center by a score of 6-2. The Beavers drop to 3-5-1 overall and 0-3 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play while North Dakota improve to 7-1-1 overall and 5-1-1 in WCHA play.
North Dakota struck early in the first period with three goals separated by less than three minutes, which included a pair of short-handed tallies. Meghan Dufault scored both of the short-handed goals, while Sam LaShomb chipped in the other on a UND power-play. North Dakota outshot BSU by only three shots (10-7), but those three extra shots found the back of the net.
Dufault would add to UND’s 3-0 lead with 6:26 gone in the second period to complete the hat trick. It was the first hat trick for North Dakota since Monique Lamoureux had four goals on March 2, 2013 versus Minnesota State University, Mankato.
Bemidji State got on the board next with a goal from Whitney Wivoda (F, R-So., Fairbanks, Alaska), which was her first goal of the season. On the goal, senior captain Allie Duellman (D, Maplewood, Minn.) and Alex Citrowske (F, Savage, Minn.) added assists.
North Dakota would answer back with 30 seconds left in the period with a goal from Joesefine Jakobsen making the score going into the final stanza 5-1.
The Beavers cut the UND lead to three with a goal from Jenessa Philipczyk (F, R-So, Stillwater, Minn.), marking the second straight game Philipczyk has scored, while it is her second career goal against North Dakota.
UND would add another goal at the 17:25 mark for the final goal of the game as it won 6-2.
After keeping the shot totals close in the first period, the Beavers were outshot 27-11 in the final two periods. Jessica Havel (R-Sr., Grand Rapids, Minn.) was inserted into the net for the Beavers in for relief of Brittni Mowat (Fr, Glenboro, Manitoba) to begin the second frame. Havel had 24 saves while allowing three goals in her season debut.
Bemidji State will look to rebound and earn its first win in conference action tomorrow as it takes on North Dakota once again. The puck drops at 2:07 p.m. from the Sanford Center.
