St. Cloud State knocks off Bemidji State, 3-1

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team was defeated by St. Cloud State University, 3-1, Friday evening. BSU drops to 8-11-2 overall and 5-9-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play while St. Cloud State improves to 4-16-3 overall and 3-12-2 WCHA.

Bemidji State would score first for only just the seventh time in 21 games this season. Kristine Grenier (F, Jr., St. Leon, Manitoba) netted her second goal in as many games and her fifth of the season on her own rebound.

BSU was 5-0-1 when scoring first this season.

Starting the second period with a lead for only the second time this season, BSU would not hold on long as SCSU scored its first goal just 3:47 into the period. After the Huskies tied it up, both teams had opportunities to gain the lead with a man advantage but did not convert.

Going into the third period, the two teams were tied 1-1.

The Huskies would break the tie at the 9:48 mark in the third period with a goal by Abby Ness, her second of the game.

BSU took the gamble at the end of the game by pulling Brittni Mowat (G, Fr., Glenboro, Manitoba) for an extra attacker, but SCSU scored an empty net goal.

The Beavers outshot the Huskies 45-31, and held SCSU without a power play goal. It marked the third straight game that BSU’s penalty killing unit did not allow a goal.

Mowat made 29 saves in the loss She moves to 8-8-2 on the season.

Bemidji State and St. Cloud State will play the series finale tomorrow at 4:07 p.m.
