BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) — The Bemidji State University women’s ice hockey team remained unbeaten as it defeated University of Vermont, 4-0, at Sanford Center Sunday afternoon. It not only improves on the best start in school history, but is also the team’s first four-game winning streak since the 2011-12 season when it knocked off University of Maine and St. Cloud State University in four consecutive tilts, Oct. 14-Oct. 22.
Reilly Fawcett (F, Fr., Proctor, Minn.) scored her first two collegiate points with a pair of assists and Ivana Bilic (D, Jr., Coquitlam, British Columbia) notched an assist to extend her point streak to four games. In goal, Brittni Mowat (G, So., Glenboro, Manitoba) made 28 saves to earn her second victory of the season and her fourth career shutout.
Bemidji State had an early opportunity to gain a lead when Vermont’s Rachael Ade was called for hooking at the 2:01 mark in the first period. Whitney Wivoda (F, Jr., Fairbanks, Alaska) made the Catamounts pay for the infraction and netted her second goal of the season at 3:37 in the first. Alex Citrowske (F, Sr., Savage, Minn.) extended BSU’s lead when she punched one in close to the net for her first goal of the season at 17:46 to give the Beavers two-goal lead heading into the first intermission.
The Beavers would add a goal in the both the second and third periods to separate themselves from the Catamounts. Stephanie Anderson (F, Jr., North St. Paul, Minn.) scored her team-leading third goal of the season at 6:42 in the second, while Jenessa Philipcyk (F, Jr., Stillwater, Minn.) netted a goal 5:54 into the third period to put the game out of reach.
A key to the game was Bemidji State’s special teams as it not only scored a power-play goal but it also denied all six power-play chances by Vermont in the contest.
Bemidji State will be idle next weekend but will return Oct. 17-18 when it opens Western Collegiate Hockey Association play at the Ohio State University. The puck drops 5:07 p.m. and 11:07 a.m., respectively from Columbus, Ohio.
