GRAND FORKS, N.D. (Ralph Engelstad Arena) — The University of North Dakota completed a sweep over the Bemidji State University women’s hockey team with a 5-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Ralph Engelstad Arena. The Beavers move to 14-13-1 overall and 9-12-1 in league play, while North Dakota improves to 14-10-2 and 10-8-2 in conference action with the result.
North Dakota struck first with a goal at the eleven-minute, twenty-three second mark of the first period by Andrea Dalen. Following the goal by Dalen, UND continued to push the envelope offensively as it outshot Bemidji State 13 to four in the opening frame. Despite the disparity in shots, BSU’s defense stiffened and the score remained 1-0 heading into the first intermission.
UND extended its lead with a goal by Shannon Kaiser. Kaiser’s shot took an odd hop over BSU’s Brittni Mowat’s left shoulder to give North Dakota a 2-0 lead.
Bemidji State got on the scoreboard at 14:26 of the second with the sixth goal of the season by Hanna Moher to cut UND’s lead to one, but North Dakota quickly answered Moher’s goal with a power-play lamp lighter by Sam LaShomb at 15:40 to put her team up, 3-1.
UND continued the offensive pressure in the third as Amy Menke netted her third goal of the series and ninth of the season to extend UND’s lead to 4-1. Halli Krzyzaniak followed Menke’s goal up 56 seconds later with a power-play goal to make it 5-1 North Dakota, which proved to be the final score.
Notes on Bemidji State
- Hanna Moher netted her sixth goal of the season in the second period, which is one shy of her career-high (seven goals) that she set last season.
- The goal by Sam LaShomb was the first power-play goal that Bemidji State has allowed since Dec. 19 against the Ohio State University. BSU had killed off 27 consecutive power-play chances prior to LaShomb’s goal.
- The Beavers fall to 20-35-4 all-time against North Dakota including a 9-22-2 mark in Grand Forks, N.D.
Next up: The Beavers will be idle next week, but will return to action Feb. 6-7 when they face off against St. Cloud State University at Sanford Center.
