Beavers trek to Minnesota State for final WCHA road series

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University women’s ice hockey team will embark on its final road trip of the regular season this weekend as it travels to play Minnesota State University, Mankato.  

About the Beavers
Bemidji State swept St. Cloud State University last weekend at Sanford Center by scores of 3-1 and 1-0. The sweep was the fifth of the season for BSU, which is a new single-season program record.         

BSU’s offense has been powered by a trio of juniors this season. Kaitlyn Tougas paces the team in points with 22 (9g, 13a), while Stephanie Anderson and Ivana Bilic lead the way in goals (10) and assists (14), respectively.

Sophomore Brittni Mowat has started 24 of the 30 games in net for Bemidji State this season. The Glenboro, Manitoba native has a 14-9-1 record to go along with an 1.57 goals against average and .947 save percentage. Mowat’s 14 victories are the most by a goaltender in a single season in program history.
 
About Minnesota State
Minnesota State (3-25-1, 1-21-1 WCHA) is fresh off a three-game week where it won its first conference game against St. Cloud State Monday, 5-1 but was swept by Ohio State on the road by scores of 3-2 and 6-0.

Freshmen Nicole Schammel and Hannah Davidson have led the Mavericks’ offense with 19 points (9g, 10a) and 14 points (6g, 8a), respectively. In addition to the pair of newcomers, senior Kathleen Rogan (3g, 6a=9pts.) has also supplied some scoring as she is tied for fourth all-time in scoring at Minnesota State with 78 points (38g, 40a).

Erin Krichiver has saw the bulk of the time in goal for the Mavericks and has a record of 2-18-1 with a 4.07 goals against average and .907 save percentage. Sophomore Brianna Quade has started MSU’s 11 remaining contests and has a mark of 1-7-0 with a 4.56 goals against average and .894 save percentage.

Weekend Rewind

One more win...
The Beavers (16-13-1, 11-12-1 WCHA) are just one win shy of tying the program record for the most wins in a single season. The 2011-12 BSU squad holds the record with 17 victories.      

Two for Tougas
Kaitlyn Tougas netted a pair of goals against St. Cloud State, which gives her 58 points (24g, 34a) in her BSU career, which ranks 15th in program history.

Brit is Legit
Goaltender Brittni Mowat tallied her fifth shutout of the season Saturday against SCSU. Mowat’s five shutouts are one shy of tying the program record (6) for most shutouts in a single season, which was set by Zuzana Tomcikova in 2010-11.     

Road Warriors
Only eight teams in the nation have won more games on the road this season than the Beavers (7 wins). Four of the teams that have more road wins are in the WCHA. (Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio State and Minnesota Duluth)   

National Defense
BSU ranks near the top of many national defensive categories including: scoring defense (7th, 1.70), penalty-kill percentage (4th, .912) and blocked shots (2nd, 526).

Anderson Adds Another
Stephanie Anderson has been particulary productive as of late with five goals since the calendar turned to 2015. Anderson’s five goals since the new year is tied for the third-most in the conference.
 
Bullets on Bilic
Defenseman Ivana Bilic added a pair of assists against St. Cloud State. The Coquitlam, British Columbia native ranks fifth all-time in points (35), goals (10) and assists (25) for a defenseman. Bilic also leads the nation with 112 blocked shots.

Hutchinson with the Helpers
Sophomore Madison Hutchinson tallied her 21st career assist on Tougas’ goal in the second, which is tied for the sixth-most by a defenseman in program history with former Beaver Brooke Collins.      
    
Series History vs. Minnesota State
The Beavers lead the all-time series against the Mavericks 29-24-10. BSU swept Minnesota State earlier this season in Bemidji, Minn. by scores of 7-4 and 2-0.  In the last 20 games between the two teams, BSU holds a 12-5-3 record against MSU.
