BEMIDJI, Minn. – The No. 9 Bemidji State University women’s ice hockey team opens regular-season play this weekend when it hosts a non-conference match-up against Robert Morris University Friday and Saturday. The Beavers will host the Colonials for a two-game series with the first game slated to start at 7:07 p.m. Friday, followed by the final game of the series at 4:07 p.m. Saturday.
No. 9 Bemidji State enters the season after a record-setting 2014-15 season that saw the Beavers set a new school record for wins (21) and the programs second ever trip to the WCHA Final Face-Off.
The Beavers return 21 student-athletes from the 2014-15 season, including its top three scorers in Kaitlyn Tougas (13g-14a=27p), Stephanie Anderson (14g-10a=24p), and Ivana Bilic (5g-18a=23p). BSU also returns the services of six double-digit scorers in Alexis Joyce (4g-14a=18p), Hanna Moher (8g-8a=16p), Madison Hutchinson (2g-12a=14p), Kristin Huber (8g-5a=13p), Whitney Wivoda (5g-8a=13p), and Lauren Miller (8g-2a=10p).
Bemidji State also returns CCM/AHCA First Team All-American goaltender Brittni Mowat for her junior season. The Glenboro, Manitoba native set program records for wins (19), GAA (1.68), and save percentage (.945). Mowat Compiled a 19-13-1 record during the season and spearheaded a BSU penalty kill that ranked third nationally with a .915 success rate.
A Look at the Colonials
Robert Morris travels to Bemidji, Minn. after going 11-19-5 last season and finished fourth (8-8-4) in College Hockey America.
RMU ranked third in its conference at 1.94 (68) goals per game despite finishing towards the bottom of the conference in shots (970). As a team, the Colonials allowed 2.44 (87) goals per game ranking them fourth in the CHA.
The Colonials return 13 student-athletes from last season, including three of their four leading scorers. Junior Mackenzie Johnston returns this season after leading the Colonials in points (21) last season. Junior goaltender Jessica Dodds returns in net after starting 29 games and posting a 9-16-4 record in 2014-15. Dodds led the team with a 2.47 GGA and .918 save percentage.
BSU holds the series lead over the Colonials at with a 7-3-0 record but are just 1-3-0 at home. The Beavers last played RMU on Sept. 26-27, 2014 in Pittsburgh, Pa., where BSU swept the Colonials in a two-game series. Anderson and Joyce went on to score the game-winning goals during the series.
