Miller nets OT winner to complete sweep over UMD

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The No. 9 Bemidji State University women's hockey team defeated the University of Minnesota Duluth in overtime Saturday afternoon after junior Lauren Miller scored the game-winning goal with 1:29 remaining. With the win, the Beavers (5-0-1, 2-0-0 WCHA) start 5-0-1 for the first time in program history.

Miller also tallied an assist on senior Kristin Huber’s goal in the second period for her second multi-point game of the season. Sophomore Alexis Joyce also recorded an assist in the game to round out the scoring for Bemidji State.

Junior goaltender Brittni Mowat followed her 31 save shutout on Friday night by stopping 31-of-32 shots by the Bulldogs to remain undefeated on the season at 5-0-0.

For the first time this season, was unable to open the scoring in the game when UMD’s Demi Crossman forced a turnover in the neutral zone and scored short-handed with just 22 seconds remaining in the first period. The Beavers didn’t take long to respond however, when Huber netted her third goal of the season five minutes into the second period.

Minnesota Duluth’s goaltender Maddie Rooney remained strong in net, as BSU tested her with 11 shots during the third period, and after 60 minutes, it would take overtime to decide a winner. Both teams had solid scoring opportunities, but after Miller found space in the slot, she found the back of the net to seal the 2-1 victory for BSU.

Bemidji State is now 2-0-0 to start Western Collegiate Hockey Association play and the series sweep marks the first time in program history the Beavers swept the Bulldog in a conference series.

BSU will continue WCHA play next weekend when they host the University of North Dakota Friday, Oct. 16 and then travel to Fargo, N.D. Saturday, Oct. 17.
