COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 5/6 Bemidji State University women’s hockey team defeated Ohio State University 2-1 Friday night in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association match-up. With the win, the Beavers (9-2-2, 6-2-1 WCHA) snapped a five-game losing streak against the Buckeyes (4-5-0, 2-5-0 WCHA) and their first in Columbus, Ohio since Nov. 8, 2013.
Senior Hanna Moher and sophomore Bailey Wright each scored for the Beavers, while seniors Ivana Bilic and Kaitlyn Tougas tallied an assist each. Junior Brittni Mowat earned her ninth win of the season and stopped 21-of-22 shots by the Buckeyes.
It didn’t take long for the Beavers to open the scoring when Moher found some space and capitalized on a great opportunity to put the Beavers up 1-0, 2:28 in the first period. Bemidji State had two power play opportunities in the period, but failed to tally another goal and went into the locker room up 1-0.
It was a defensive second period in Columbus, Ohio as both teams combined for nine shots. Goaltenders Mowat and Alex LaMere were flawless in the period and the Beavers headed into the third holding a 1-0 lead.
Wright scored her first goal at Bemidji State, and the game-winner, to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead 5:14 into the third period. The Buckeyes scored their first goal of the game with 3:25 left in the game after Dana Rasmussen made it 2-1. The Beavers found themselves shorthanded with 3:00 minutes remaining, but Bemidji State’s penalty killers blanked the Buckeyes and BSU held on to defeat Ohio State 2-1.
