BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) – Despite a frantic third period, the No. 8 Bemidji State University women's hockey team was unable to erase a 3-0 deficit and dropped the opening game of a Western Collegiate Hockey Association series to Ohio State University, 3-1, Friday afternoon.
The Beavers out shot the Buckeyes, 19-4 during the final 20 minutes of play, and senior captain Madison Hutchinson netted a goal, but it was too little too late as the OSU goaltender, Kassidy Sauve, stood the test to seal the victory for the Buckeyes.
OSU came out of the gates quickly, taking a 1-0 lead just 4:10 after the opening face off. Lauren Spring recorded her first goal of the season on a pass from Rebecca Freiburger to put the Buckeyes up early. Just 2:39 later, Erin Langermeier would score to give Ohio State all the offense it would need as Sauve finished with 35 saves on 36 shots faced in 59:52 of play and improved to 3-1-1 on the season.
Freiburger added her first goal of 2016-17 at the 7:44 mark of the second period to give the Buckeyes a three-goal cushion heading into the third period.
Hutchinson's first goal of the season goal cut the OSU lead to 3-1 with just over 10 minutes to play in the third period. But as soon as the Beavers picked up momentum, they lost a player to the penalty box and played the next two minutes short. Reilly Fawcett and Emily Bergland were credited with assists on the scoring play.
Brittni Mowat was in the crease for the Beavers and recorded 19 saves, but was tagged with the loss after allowing three goals. She moves to 2-2-0 on the season.
The Beavers, now 3-1 overall and 1-1 in WCHA play, will attempt to salvage a series split tomorrow when they again host the Buckeyes for a 3:07 p.m. series finale at Sanford Center.
