Badgers complete sweep of Bemidji State

MADISON, Wis. – The Bemidji State University women's hockey team fell to No. 1 University of Wisconsin, 6-0, and second-straight shutout for the Badgers, Sunday afternoon to complete the Western Collegiate Hockey Association series sweep.

The shutout marks the third-straight game without scoring a goal for the Beavers and the first time since 2008 that Bemidji State has failed to score in three games. The loss is also the fourth straight for the Beavers who haven’t won since Oct. 15.

Wisconsin opened the scoring midway through the first period when Sarah Nurse found space behind the Beavers’ defense and scored a short-handed breakaway goal at 10:08. The Badgers then extended their lead to two and snapped the Beavers’ 30 straight penalty kill streak with a power-play goal by Abby Roque, three minutes later.

Wisconsin would extend its lead to three, 2:07 into the second period when Alexis Mauermann scored her second goal of the season. That would be the only tally in the middle period as the Badgers would begin the third period with a 3-0 lead.

The Badgers increased their lead 4:44 into the final period when Mauermann scored her third goal of the series, second of the game to put Wisconsin ahead 4-0. Nurse made it 5-0 with her second goal of the game with just 4:41 remaining. Wisconsin scored their final goal of the game with a power-play goal by Roque with just 18 seconds remaining.

The Beavers had their chances during the game but went 0-for-6 on the power play while the Badgers went 2-for-7 with the extra attacker. Junior Erin Deters made 35 saves in just her second start of the season and falls to 1-1-0.

Wisconsin’s Ann-Renne Desbiens earned her 44th career shutout, breaking the NCAA all-time record and improved to 11-0-1 on the season.

The Beavers will take a break from WCHA play next weekend and hosts the Minnesota Whitecaps in part of an exhibition series, Nov. 11-12. Former Bemidji State Beaver Stephanie Anderson will return to Bemidji and compete for the Whitecaps after winning gold for Team USA at the Four Nations Cup this weekend.
