Beavers dominate in 6-2 win over Huskies

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University women's team totaled a season-high 57 shots on net and also scored a season-best six goals in a 6-2 victory of St. Cloud State University. The Beavers (5-7-1, 3-7-1 WCHA) snap a six-game winless streak and garner three points in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Standings.

The Beavers were led by freshman Haley Mack who tallied three assists, a career-best, while six different Beavers scored goals. Sophomore Melissa Hunt, freshman Abby Halluska and junior Summer Thibodeau each registered a goal and an assist while freshman Kiki Radke added two assists.

Lauren Miller, Emily Bergland and Reilly Fawcett each scored a goal while Jacqueline Kaasa, Ciscely Nelson, Heather Olson and Briana Jorde each tallied one assist during the game.

St. Cloud State opened the scoring when Janna Haeg beat goaltender Brittni Mowat, 8:14 into the first period. Bemidji State answered quickly, however, when Thibodeau scored just 56 seconds later. The Beavers took their first lead of the game when Miller tipped a shot from Radke past Janine Alder at 14:10. The Beavers weren’t finished scoring during the period and Halluska made it 3-1, just 1:41 later. The Beavers totaled a season-high 23 shots in the period and were just eight shy of tying a school record (31, vs. Lindenwood, Nov. 10, 2011).

Hunt scored her fist goal of the season while on the power play to start the scoring in the second period at 8:17 followed by the Beavers’ fifth goal of the game from Fawcett just 2:13 later. The Beavers would tally 17 shots during the second period while holding the Huskies to just four.

St. Cloud State would halt the Beavers’ consecutive goal streak in the third period when a BSU turnover left Ivy Dynek alone for the unassisted goal at 3:12 of the third period. However, the Beavers would regain their four-goal lead when Bergland scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season at 8:31, snapping a six game pointless streak. The scoreboard would remain unchanged through the remainder of the period and the Beavers took game one of the series, 6-2.

Bemidji State went 1-for-1 with the extra attacker while its penalty kill stopped St. Cloud State’s lone chance.

Mowat earned the win for Bemidji State and improved to 4-6-1 on the season after stopping 16-of-18 shots while Alder falls to 4-5-1.

The Beavers will be back in action tomorrow for the series finale against the Huskies with puck drop slated for 3:07 p.m.
